I don’t mean to sound rude but how is this a fair contest? You have an entry deadline of March 21 and most upvotes by then wins. Obviously whoever entered earlier has more of a chance to be seen and get votes. Whereas someone who say enters on March 21, well thanks for playing but you entered for no reason as you don’t stand a chance. Even people who decide to enter now they’ve practically lost. No disrepsect to flowlistik but he already won and might as well give him an ultimaker now as no one who enters later will ever catch up. This contest is flawed. Should be remade and adjusted so voting begins for everyone at a specific date after all entries are collected by entry deadline.
I think Edthomp makes a good point. I started designing my entry as soon as I saw this contest pop up and it’ll be about a week before I’m finished modeling and another week until it is finished printing. It would be a little more even if the submission deadline was on March 21 with a voting period lasting another month (April 21). That would level the playing field for everyone.
Definitely. Seems like those who already have had a star wars model made beforehand has a huge advantage because they can submit their old works. People who decide to create new works after seeing this contest are at a great disadvatage because it takes time to create something new.
De-entering the competition.
None of my things were made for the competition, I think people that create things FOR the comp should enter.
I thought this was wrong from the first day of the competition. Entries in the competition should be made for the competition.
I would like a good design competition (there are a few). I can do the design and have access to a printer at work (so I know what works and what doesn’t - but I’m not allowed to use it for personal prints) and would love to have one at home. So, here’s a contest for people who have a printer and they can win a printer. I feel it’s another case of “the rich get richer…” I can see giving away spools to people with printers - that makes sense, but not giving away a printer to people with a printer.
As a post-script - Yes, I enter every competition I can where I can win a printer. I just don’t have the opportunity to enter this one.
I have no gripes about submitting older works if the contest holder deems they are valid. I also agree that this contest should be made for people who made models for this contest as those individuals put in the work specifically for it. It would be more refreshing to see newer works get some recognition. Big fan of your modeling btw. The voting just needs to allow everyone an equal chance. It’s just quite discouraging that any new entries beyond this point be not be worth one’s effort.
I agree with you, my Darth Vader is really ugly (and don’t even think about what’s under that mask), focusing on a low-poly style limits what I can do with my designs, and 3D printing has some limitations too. The final result is usually what it’s left after solving the low-poly and the 3D printing problems or limitations.
About the real good job, be sure that people can see it. Your work and most of the other entries of the contest have my upvote, because I find them amazing and really inspiring. Your design is really detailed, and I wouldn’t even consider designing such a complex thing, my knowledge is very limited compared to yours. I wouldn’t be so interested in 3D printing if it wasn’t for all the community behind it, and be sure that I will die sharing my work and fighting for an open community.
I’m sorry if the upvotes my entry has have made you believe I cheated. Consider that I asked my followers and my closest friends to take a look and vote me if they considered I deserved the vote. Having fifty upvotes should be considered a complete fail. Is that cheating? Some of my friends have registered to vote me. I won’t hide anything, if 3D Hubs think I should be disqualified or that I shouldn’t participate, I will accept it.
This competition is terribly flawed. With a quick VPN shuffle I could up upvote any of these to #1. I think anyone who didn’t make the model specifically for this Comp should pull out.
Wow. Did not know about that. That will definitely lead to malicious intents. Maybe a better way to pick a winner is to go by the number of downloads a model has. That may works great as it will be newly uploaded models without preexisting downloads and a more definite way of showing popularity. This upvote voting system is horrible. It can definitley be gamed. Hope someone can bring this to the attention of the contest holder or some 3d hubs admin.
Switching ip, proxy, doesn’t let you vote more. It’s 1 up vote per 3dhubs account. One needs to log into their account to vote. Meaning if someone wanted to do say 20 votes, they would need 20 email addresses and sign up for 20 new 3D hubs accounts. That I’m sure would be noticeable and flagged by the contest holders.
Yeah, it’s disgustingly easy to rig, I could do about 80 entries per hour if I was bothered. I feel like doing it tho just to show 3D hubs why you don’t run a comp on this fashion. I doubt flowalitisk cheated tho, as he said he asked friends to come vote for him, nothing stopping the others doing that also.
personally, I think the first prize should reflect the effort given too. Motorised AT-AT gets my vote.
Of course you can lol.,
Even if you wanted to do it manually. 1. Create email, create hubs account, 2. Change VPN zone.
3. Repeat.
Don’t be rude. I doubt he cheated, however, I believe he has earned his upvotes by having his entry in early when there was very few to begin with. And being stickied on top allows for people to quickly upvote his entry easier. It’s just the flawed nature of this contest. You may have different opinions about other’s work but you have no rights to such negative accusations.
That being said the contest did state: Goal : Design and print a new and innovative Star Wars prop or gadget. Which may invalidate alot of earlier creations. I’d also like to note that I have no stake in this contest as I am impartial and have not the experienced modeling talent as some of you. It’s just discouraging for me to see that people who create designs specifically for this contest be at such of an disadvantage to someone who just puts their older work up. I’d personally like to see some new works and print some new design I haven’t seen before.
Contest holder may choose be be more clear. But at the very least revisit the voting method to allow everyone a fair shake.
Edit correction: looks like the goal asks for new under the summary but fails to have that keyword up top. So not sure what’s valid anymore at all. Creator needs to be clear whether new models created for this contest is valid or old star wars model created since the beginning of time is also valid.
This is lovely!
Hi simona, I was wondering if the contest is going to give the price according to upvotes or according to the project, I mean it would be easier to win having many friends, am I wrong?
Sorry if you thought I was rude it was not the goal, excuez me.
I just find that a lot of creation are much better than Vader flowalistik.
After I did not do my sword for this competition it is true, but I finished it just when the competition started.
Now I find that the competition is not fair, it would take an impartial jury in a vote for more and more like
Guys please read the contest rules! It says DESIGN and print not download other peoples designs. People who have just printed someone else’s work do not really fit the contest requirements.
I understand you, and feel free to call my designs ugly, because I will probably agree with you. Your design is really detailed, and if you put side by side your design and mine everyone would prefer the lightsaber. As users are the ones who decide who has more or less votes, there are other things we should consider:
I’ve been designing low-poly models for more than a year, and my models are really easy to print as my priority was to make all the printing (and post-processing) as easy and smooth as possible. If we asked a group of 100 people with a 3D printer how many would make your lightsaber, maybe 5/100 would have the tools, time, passion for SW and money to make yours (being so detailed and using so many components reduces a lot the number of people who would make it). With my model, which can be certainly ugly, 100/100 people would be able to print it in 2 hours and with no extra material. I believe that can be the reason why my ugly Darth Vader is popular, and it’s because it’s so easy that everyone can make it.
I see your lightsaber design as a collector item and my Darth Vader as a Happy Meal toy.
Never change Agustin! I’m hyped for your next release
Hi guys, just a quick update on the contest and rules. I’ve just had a call with Ultimaker and we look at the issue as “upvotes” as judging criteria for the entries. Indeed upvotes are not the clearest way to show the great work behind an innovative, inspiring Star Wars design. Together we decided on the following, based also on your feedback.
A jury composed by Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members will decide on the 3 winners on March 21st. Upvotes will be used by the community to show appreciation for the design, but not as the mean to elect the winner.
Any question, please ask
Judging Criteria Update: Together with Ultimaker we saw the issues in the upvoting system for the design entries. For this reason we’ve changed the judging criteria system from upvotes to a jury, which will be composed by Ultimaker and 3D Hubs. The winner of the competition will be declared on March 21st. In this way everyone will have enough time to create and print the best Star Wars gadget around. Hope this can solve any issue around the competition. If you’ve any question, please ask
Hey! Thanks for your feedback on the competition. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. Do you have any question? Please ask.
Hey! This is really great feedback, thanks for it. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative and new design on Star Wars topic. Hope this helps. Cheers, Simona
