I thought this was wrong from the first day of the competition. Entries in the competition should be made for the competition.
I would like a good design competition (there are a few). I can do the design and have access to a printer at work (so I know what works and what doesn’t - but I’m not allowed to use it for personal prints) and would love to have one at home. So, here’s a contest for people who have a printer and they can win a printer. I feel it’s another case of “the rich get richer…” I can see giving away spools to people with printers - that makes sense, but not giving away a printer to people with a printer.
As a post-script - Yes, I enter every competition I can where I can win a printer. I just don’t have the opportunity to enter this one.
I have no gripes about submitting older works if the contest holder deems they are valid. I also agree that this contest should be made for people who made models for this contest as those individuals put in the work specifically for it. It would be more refreshing to see newer works get some recognition. Big fan of your modeling btw. The voting just needs to allow everyone an equal chance. It’s just quite discouraging that any new entries beyond this point be not be worth one’s effort.
Hi simona, I was wondering if the contest is going to give the price according to upvotes or according to the project, I mean it would be easier to win having many friends, am I wrong?
Sorry if you thought I was rude it was not the goal, excuez me.
I just find that a lot of creation are much better than Vader flowalistik.
After I did not do my sword for this competition it is true, but I finished it just when the competition started.
Now I find that the competition is not fair, it would take an impartial jury in a vote for more and more like
Guys please read the contest rules! It says DESIGN and print not download other peoples designs. People who have just printed someone else’s work do not really fit the contest requirements.
I understand you, and feel free to call my designs ugly, because I will probably agree with you. Your design is really detailed, and if you put side by side your design and mine everyone would prefer the lightsaber. As users are the ones who decide who has more or less votes, there are other things we should consider:
I’ve been designing low-poly models for more than a year, and my models are really easy to print as my priority was to make all the printing (and post-processing) as easy and smooth as possible. If we asked a group of 100 people with a 3D printer how many would make your lightsaber, maybe 5/100 would have the tools, time, passion for SW and money to make yours (being so detailed and using so many components reduces a lot the number of people who would make it). With my model, which can be certainly ugly, 100/100 people would be able to print it in 2 hours and with no extra material. I believe that can be the reason why my ugly Darth Vader is popular, and it’s because it’s so easy that everyone can make it.
I see your lightsaber design as a collector item and my Darth Vader as a Happy Meal toy.
Hi Geoff, hope with the new rules you would re-enter the competition. I really apologies for the rules making you uncomfortable. Hope the new setup, with a judging panel, is fairer for all the community.
Hey! Thanks for your feedback on the competition. It’s important to say that this is not a contest made just for people who have a 3D printer. We’re a printing network connecting you to close 3D printers, so if you want to print your Star Wars designs you have the possibility to print it at nearby Hubs.
I have an update on criteria selection of the winner. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. I’m very grateful for the feedback on this. Cheers, Simona
Very true, however, after the complains on this topic, we felt the necessity to change some rules in order to make all the participants comfortable. The winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. Thanks a lot for the feedback. Cheers, Simona
I guess I will participate with my favourite Star Wars character, the Low Poly Darth Vader! There are two versions, with and without cape (Edna Mode would be proud of me!). It was designed so anyone with a 3D printer (or a 3D Hub near) could have one. It only has 3D printed parts, it takes only 2 hours to print it and it doesn’t need any post-processing.
For me, innovation means easier, not more complex, specially when we are talking about a limited technology such as 3D printing. Following the less is more idea, I’ve used a faceted style to simplify the printing process, creating this Star Wars souvenir. It was designed specially for kids, as printing and assembling the model doesn’t require any extra skills, tools or time. Just print it and enjoy it.
You can download it on the following YouMagine link:
Great news! This is a lot more fair. Hope to see brand new designs! March 21 is still the deadline and a winner is chosen on the 21st as well? Hopefully the jury doesn’t weigh too heavily on votes then for the sake of the late entries. Also you might want to state a specific cut off time on the 21st.
Yes I will re-enter Simona, but I am working on a new one specifically for this competition - I have probably 50 or so I could enter that have been made previously, but that doesn’t require alot of effort and there’s no fun in that, also I think more exciting to see new designs from others also - so far all the entries are ones I’ve seen many times on other sites, so yeah it would be good to have a refreshing load of new starwars models come from this if anything. :p.
For the same reasons as Geoff_Wicks: I have made these models in the past and not specifically for the contest so i feel kinda weird about that.
Plus all the fuss about the contest kinda sapped my moral so i don’t want to be a part of it anymore.
I’m still gonna let my designs available on Youmagine for people to enjoy. I usually post only on MyMiniFactory but what the hell… I might as well let these here.
I’d like to participate with my Jedi Holocron Cube, one of my favorite Star Wars related items. It was designed to be very easy to print, no support/rafts/etc, while allowing for a lot of customization regarding post-printing finishing options. Inside is a 1"x1"x1" space for adding lighting effects. In the photo I printed the internal cube in transparent PTEG, and the side panels in white ABS. After printing the side panels were spray painted with 24k gold acrylic. 3 side panels are attached to each half of the internal cube. Everything was printed at 200 micron, the internal cube was printed with 0% infill, and the side panels 100% infill, and It took about 12 hours. It was designed to take advantage of a 3D printers ability to repeatably make complex object, print in place small push fit pins, and print objects that contain internal voids for electronics.
You can download the files to print the Jedi Holocron Cube, at the following link.
Here is the screen accurate Cosplay prop of the Storm Trooper Officer Pistol (SE-44C) I designed and printed. I originally designed this for the 501st Legion but decided I’d also enter it into the competition!
There are to many parts to just upload them to the post so here is the link! I’ve attached an image showing my print next to the actual screen prop picture.
Dont forget to follow me on facebook and instagram if you like what i do
hi everyone just got my prints back from a very kind friend of a friend with a printer so here are my luke and vader mini figures I’m entering for this contest that I designed on tinkercad. this is link
One of my favourite Star wars characters is Count Dooku, especially the Clone Wars version, and I have been wanting to sculpt one for a while now, so here it goes. It was 3d sculpted using ZBrush and 3d printed on a Zortrax m200, then Hand painted using Vallejo paints!
The project was supposed to be a study after the original sculpt of Darren E. Marshall a challenge to see if I can make it look as close as possible to the original and a huge desire to have that sculpt in my office, I ended up learning so much from this project.
Make sure to check out my Blog for the entire project walkthrough
Hi, I finally printed my design for this competition, I did a little Ewok head to support my Wacom pen, you can also find a version without the hole so you can modify it the way you want.
My entering for the competition is a designed by myself lightsaber. I wanted to do something different for this competition since it is my dream to one day work or participate in a star wars movie or project. The lightsaber consist of six printed parts and takes a total of four hours.
Design is my passion, with this idea in mind I’ve designed a lightsaber thats easy to print and very easy to assemble. So if you like it give me a thumbs up and the force will be forever in your favor!
Do you think the sole reason to enter a competition is to win? I’m here to learn, share my experience, meet new people, promote my blog, promote my hub and I can go on… and when I wrote that my “Zortrax was gathering a bit of dust” I was trying to prove a point, maybe I was to subtle (I’ll try better next time). I really hope you entered the contest and I really hope you win the Ultimaker this way you can stop worrying about people having too many 3d printers in the shop!
It is motorized and remote-controlled to move around and interact.
I’ve made the design in SketchUp, It’s printed half-size so it doesn’t take tons of filament. The robotic platform is Arduino-based so you can add programmable LEDs and sounds.
First my idea was too large and too little time to implement, so I said that the size dosn’t matters and I focus on utility. Too soon I have a ball and decided to make cufflinks for my shirt. I am a fan of Star Wars so of course the cufflinks will be the theme in StarWars. They have been printed with a layer 0.15 in ABS. Everyone knows that the biggest problem is just the smallest prints, so it was this time.
I hope that someone like them and surely someone will use them:)
My friend and I decided to make the map to Luke Skywalker from “The Force Awakens.” Then we took it a dozen steps further.
To be clear, we didn’t print the map itself. We printed the flash-drive-shaped object that BB-8 carries around, but with space to fit a real flash drive within it. With this, we came to realize, “What good is a flash drive without a USB port?”
So then we printed a Star Wars themed USB port with over a dozen 3D printed PLA parts. The port is complete with a mechanical descending and lowering vertical port, plus a fully-functional mechanical iris door at the top. The Resistance can finally read USB drives.
Is there a specific cut off time on March 21st? You mentioned that the winners will be decided on March 21st so there must be a cut off time in order to give the Ultimaker / 3D Hubs team members enough time to go through all the submissions and decide on the winners.
