Yep, I agree, I am actually pulling my entries out. They were made ages ago, one of them in 2014.
I wonder why all these maker competitions are designed to be this way. Instructables contests always have a bunch of submissions of things made in the past. Maybe a better format would be to declare the topic and rules of the competition and give a month for makers to prepare their design before opening up submissions? Anyway, just my two cents.
Don’t be rude. I doubt he cheated, however, I believe he has earned his upvotes by having his entry in early when there was very few to begin with. And being stickied on top allows for people to quickly upvote his entry easier. It’s just the flawed nature of this contest. You may have different opinions about other’s work but you have no rights to such negative accusations.
That being said the contest did state: Goal : Design and print a new and innovative Star Wars prop or gadget. Which may invalidate alot of earlier creations. I’d also like to note that I have no stake in this contest as I am impartial and have not the experienced modeling talent as some of you. It’s just discouraging for me to see that people who create designs specifically for this contest be at such of an disadvantage to someone who just puts their older work up. I’d personally like to see some new works and print some new design I haven’t seen before.
Contest holder may choose be be more clear. But at the very least revisit the voting method to allow everyone a fair shake.
Edit correction: looks like the goal asks for new under the summary but fails to have that keyword up top. So not sure what’s valid anymore at all. Creator needs to be clear whether new models created for this contest is valid or old star wars model created since the beginning of time is also valid.
This is lovely!
Hi simona, I was wondering if the contest is going to give the price according to upvotes or according to the project, I mean it would be easier to win having many friends, am I wrong?
Sorry if you thought I was rude it was not the goal, excuez me.
I just find that a lot of creation are much better than Vader flowalistik.
After I did not do my sword for this competition it is true, but I finished it just when the competition started.
Now I find that the competition is not fair, it would take an impartial jury in a vote for more and more like
Judging Criteria Update: Together with Ultimaker we saw the issues in the upvoting system for the design entries. For this reason we’ve changed the judging criteria system from upvotes to a jury, which will be composed by Ultimaker and 3D Hubs. The winner of the competition will be declared on March 21st. In this way everyone will have enough time to create and print the best Star Wars gadget around. Hope this can solve any issue around the competition. If you’ve any question, please ask
Hey! Thanks for your feedback on the competition. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. Do you have any question? Please ask.
Hey! This is really great feedback, thanks for it. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative and new design on Star Wars topic. Hope this helps. Cheers, Simona
Thanks, that’s much fairer.
Hi Geoff, hope with the new rules you would re-enter the competition. I really apologies for the rules making you uncomfortable. Hope the new setup, with a judging panel, is fairer for all the community.
Any question, please ask!
Simona
Hey! Thanks for your feedback on the competition. It’s important to say that this is not a contest made just for people who have a 3D printer. We’re a printing network connecting you to close 3D printers, so if you want to print your Star Wars designs you have the possibility to print it at nearby Hubs.
I have an update on criteria selection of the winner. In order to maintain the fairness of the competition and its entries, the winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. I’m very grateful for the feedback on this. Cheers, Simona
Very true, however, after the complains on this topic, we felt the necessity to change some rules in order to make all the participants comfortable. The winners will be chosen by a selected jury of Ultimaker and 3D Hubs team members. The judging criteria will still be the same: the most innovative design on Star Wars topic. Thanks a lot for the feedback. Cheers, Simona
It looks like peace has been restored again
Will up votes still be considered by the panel of judges? Will someone with say 1000 up votes have a higher chance of winning than someone with 0?
They will be taken in account as a mention of honour from the community
So up votes still matter and count. Gotcha, good to know.
I guess I will participate with my favourite Star Wars character, the Low Poly Darth Vader! There are two versions, with and without cape (Edna Mode would be proud of me!). It was designed so anyone with a 3D printer (or a 3D Hub near) could have one. It only has 3D printed parts, it takes only 2 hours to print it and it doesn’t need any post-processing.
For me, innovation means easier, not more complex, specially when we are talking about a limited technology such as 3D printing. Following the less is more idea, I’ve used a faceted style to simplify the printing process, creating this Star Wars souvenir. It was designed specially for kids, as printing and assembling the model doesn’t require any extra skills, tools or time. Just print it and enjoy it.
You can download it on the following YouMagine link:

(Don’t forget to check my YouMagine profile, you will find more Star Wars models and other low-poly designs, all of them as easy to print as the one you can see here)
darthvader_lowpoly_body.STL (107 KB)
darthvader_lowpoly_bodycape.STL (122 KB)

Great news! This is a lot more fair. Hope to see brand new designs! March 21 is still the deadline and a winner is chosen on the 21st as well? Hopefully the jury doesn’t weigh too heavily on votes then for the sake of the late entries. Also you might want to state a specific cut off time on the 21st.
haha +1 for the happy meal comment
Yes I will re-enter Simona, but I am working on a new one specifically for this competition - I have probably 50 or so I could enter that have been made previously, but that doesn’t require alot of effort and there’s no fun in that, also I think more exciting to see new designs from others also - so far all the entries are ones I’ve seen many times on other sites, so yeah it would be good to have a refreshing load of new starwars models come from this if anything. :p.
I absolutely agree with you and hope you win!!!
Ok today I got my H-bridge, I will update the youmagine page, waiting for my bluetooth module
I am De-entering the competition as well.
For the same reasons as Geoff_Wicks: I have made these models in the past and not specifically for the contest so i feel kinda weird about that.
Plus all the fuss about the contest kinda sapped my moral so i don’t want to be a part of it anymore.
I’m still gonna let my designs available on Youmagine for people to enjoy. I usually post only on MyMiniFactory but what the hell… I might as well let these here.
I’m withdrawing my entries. See comment bellow to know why.
I don’t have one design… but THREE
The famous A-Wing that destroyed the Super Destroyer in Return of The Jedi:

So so so so so soooooo cool! Do you think it would be possible to make it a little bit bigger without changing the electronics?
