I purchased the chip. It had limitations. Like the preset default temps for PLA and ABS. It appeared you could change them in the bios program, but when the file loaded on the printer it was back to the default temps. After realizing the XYZ warranty and customer service, was all but useless. I flashed the printer with repetier and don’t have to deal with any of that now.

If you bought a davinci for its warranty or customer service, you didn’t do your research. As someone else pointed out, correct firmware does not “go bad”, but a firmware update can have issues and I think it’s even more likely that something on the board went out. Their warranty dept should have offered a new board, but since they didn’t even get the heatbed right, it’s entirely possible they would have sent you an incompatible motherboard (AIO, 1.0 vs 1.0a, etc) and I’ve heard of that happening.

Their business model is to sell these so cheap that there’s never room for shipping the entire unit back, and if you ever do, you HAVE to replace the packing material to secure everything in place, no matter who you send it with. It’s a good idea to do this if you’re putting this in your own moving truck. Sorry you had a bad experience, but aside from small repairs (x and y-idlers) you could buy two davinci’s and they would last longer than any other big name like the Taz or ultimaker, and still be half the price.

I can say the school I attend has 4 Makerbot 2xs and my Da Vinci has far outlasted those printers but those printers have been abused by people who literally have no clue what they are doing.

I will say that if you are looking for a plug-n-play just to produce knick knack and don’t possibly buying a new printer in a year then this is for you.

I used the chip resetter once and then flashed to repetier, havent looked back since. It performs better and has been my primary printer for the past couple of months as I repaired my Delta.

I am always puzzled by the paradox of people who buy the cheapest stuff around that are then caught completely off guard when they don’t get spectacular results. You really should have expected this, or at least not have been surprised by it… maybe you’ve learned a lesson for the next thing you buy.

It’s a lot less the quality of the printer. Its exactly what you should expect from spending $650. The company made Forbes so I thought they would be decent.

I think you have too much expectation for XYZ printer, they are not high-end products, the only reason we buy it is because of the price. I have 4 XYZprinting Nobel 1.0 and one Envsiontec Micro Advantage for my business, Envisiontec is much better, but the price is about 10 times of XYZprinting. If you can afford some expensive printer, maybe you should try some 3d systems, Envisiontec or staratasys printer, they have the best printer in the market.

I’m starting to think it is a industry standard to not have good customer service. I have dealt with MakerBot wanting me to pay $150 for them to tell me I need to uninstall Makerware and reinstall it and I have had to work with Stratasys at school, I can see where Makerbot gets it from.

I have heard that with 3D Systems you are lucky to hear a response.

Its depressing.

ya, how do you like the nobel? I was thinking about buying one to gut it and make it into an open source SLA ala (littleRP.com 1) anyone heard if an open source firmware can run on it like the davinci?

To be honest, it is not the best SLA printer, it not as good as EnvisionTec or Formlabs, but you know, formlabs is 3000+ and EnvisionTec is 10K+… consider the price…it is really good. Print quality is almost same with form 1+, print speed is a little bit slow.

My da Vinci 1.0 was fine for a bit and then started to develop issues with printing. Very long story short, my printer began spewing magic smoke from the main board. I know that it happened due to the clump of ABS that I was trying to remove probably over-heated everything. I’m not going to get them to repair it (their service department sucks). I’m going to try and fix it, flash it and see if I can turn it into a truly usable printer (which it seems to have the potential to be). If all attempts fail, I’m going to re-task the drives and build a laser engraver with the parts I already have. I’m NOT going to buy another proprietary POS XYZprinter.

And yes, I agree… DO NOT BUY XYZ.
