Id say fully 3d printing this would be expensive and an overkill. Foam would be better and lighter. Looks like a rounded piece of wood was used along with cardboard.

Hey all, I want to thank everyone for such quick replies. Just want to say quick Im in class currently and for the majority of the day but I will go through and get back to you guys once labs let out. Some quick notes I didn’t mention that were brought up: -I’d prefer the piece to be functional, but it’s not something that is a must as long as it appears to function. This is a cosplay piece first, so my priority is making sure it meets those guidelines for conventions. I do a lot of prop work, mainly with the 501st Stormtrooper guys. Are you looking for the entire thing assembled and finished or just the parts 3d printed? Do you have the 3D model files already available or will you need someone to model them up for you? If you’re needing this modeled from scratch, things do start to get expensive.

My estimate is 200 plus cost of supplies and design. Design 30, supplies be about 30. And shipping. So this prob can be around 300.

I have a couple of questions:

Do you require the neck to be printed and if so what is the length?

What is the diameter of the larger circular piece?

Yes, the entire thing would need to be made. From what I understand, the guitar would not be functional if fully cast as a 3d print unless somebody (yourself or others) are able to make the neck be able to withstand the torque of the strings, which would be preferred, I am alright with it simply being a prop if it is not possible.

As far as the length and diameter, I don’t have exacts, but I’m sure if I spent some time analyzing the photos and comparing them to myself (5’8’’/173cm), I could come up with a guesstimate.

I know its kinda vague answer, but at the moment, thats about the best I can answer. I’m sorry ;–;

Thank you for finding the rest of the images. While, yes, it might be overkill, I am also looking for durability and quality. I have some foam props (Elks staff from .hack//infection is my major piece), but they’re fragile and tend to crack or chip, which is why I’m looking to invest a little extra for a higher quality prop.

To answer your questions, the guitar doesn’t need to be functional, but if its possible, it would be a huge plus for the cosplay.
As far as the plastic goes, I wouldn’t have an issue. I know this poses a bit of a challenge for the functionality of the guitar, but in the end, it is a prop for a cosplay vs a real instrument.

Sounds like you’re in the initial stages of this project. Printing will come, and quickly, after the long journey of researching the physics of stringed instruments, and design costs. When you get to the printing stage, find a hub that offers large build volumes, to accommodate the single piece design.

I agree that the torque of the strings on the neck would cause would be high. If there is a way of making this functional, I’m down for exploring those routes, as it would make the prop (and therefore the cosplay) more realistic, but my main focus is the prop itself; functionality is nice, but secondary.

I greatly appreciate you being a guitarist, and therefore, your knowledge on both these two subjects. My question thusly is that I understand that making this a functional piece will be difficult, so what would your thoughts be on the best way to design this so the prop comes out as intended (top priority), yet still a functional piece? As mentioned below, and as I’m sure you know, the strings will cause a lot of stress on the neck for a functioning piece; would you reinforce the neck or are there better options available? I understand the costs of labor/time/etc as far as these things go, which is why i’m not terribly concerned with a budget, within reason, of course.

–As far as a relative size, I’m 5’8’’/173cm, so a full-sized guitar would probably be best.
–The clock would be pretty sweet if functional, and would give the prop some use when not cosplaying, but is a low priority. Still… that is a pretty cool idea and will have to give that some thought.

My original plan was wood or a combination, which should have made this a bit easier of a build as a functional piece, but I just couldn’t find anybody willing to commission it, which is why i’m moving to what, in my opinion, would be my next best option.

Im not very knowledgeable in 3d printing as all my props are done with foams and pvc. I’ve also never had needed a prop that, in theory, can be used as an instrument, so you’re right there: I have no idea about stringed instrument physics
