Thermistor/Temperature Issues

Hi all, I am having issues with my Monoprice Maker Select. Every time that I turn it on, the temperature for the hot end reads -20C then immediately goes to “def.” Could this be because I have a replaced the old thermistor (accidentally broke it)? Any other advice? Thanks
