Z-axis Binding

I bought a Anet A8 and have assembled it. Everything works well except for the Z-axis. There is some sort of binding happening so the right motor spins but the left motor stalls. I have adjusted the X-axis rods but this doesn’t seem to help.

I have noticed that the left side rod and screw shaft aren’t parrallel. Could this be the problem? If so how to I fix things?

The threaded rods are on flexible couplers so it’s ok for them to move, however the two smooth rods should be perfectly straight… if one as you say is not then that’s most likley the culprit… If there both straight and your still having binding problems you may have to adjust the motor current

On the controller board there will be 5 driver boards you should be able to tell what they are as they will have little heat sinks on the top of them… each will have a trim pot on them which you can turn to increase our decrease the current … you’ll need to identify which one is for the correct motor. Is the X axis cartridge straight? if it’s sitting at an angle that could also cause binding, it’s also the easiest fix. Just turn the printer off and manually turn one of the Z motors until it straightens up

Colin, on my mainboard there is only one trim pot and that is for the z-axis motors. I turned it a little bit clockwise and now there is no stalling in the Z direction! Thank you for the tip. This was starting to drive me a little bonkers.

i got my anet a8 about a month ago and when building it up i had a problem where the x rods wasnt running parallel with eact other which could give you the problem for the z . The right side of the holes for the rods was about 5mil closer together than the left side . out came the hacksaw for a temp fix until i printed a new one off . All is good now . Hope this helps any .

I solved this problem by unscrewing the threaded part from the plastic, just enough that i could slip some tiny washers to angle the large screw portion so that it sits pointing directly down at the Z motor, so I dont have to flex it and bind the thread just to get it to fit into the motor.
