[Updated on March 16, 2017]

Half a year ago I asked you 1 which 3D scanners you would like to see reviewed. Again, thanks for the many replies! Here’s an overview of the hardware I reviewed so far:

Professional 3D Scanners

Infrared Depth Sensors

Upcoming Reviews (confirmed)

  • Orbecc Astra S
  • Artec Space Spider
  • HP Sprout Pro G2
  • Matter and Form Bevel
  • Scan in a Box* (*Please let me know how badly you want to have that one tested).

That brings me to the question:

Which Scanner(s) should I try to add to that list in 2017?

P.S. You’ll notice that I’ve moved my blog from my personal domain to 3Dscanexpert.com 6 where I now also write posts with News, Inspiration & Tips about 3D Scanning. I’ll also increase my coverage about Photogrammetry (Software) in 2017.

Hi Nick

Please review Skanect with Structure Sensor.

Keep up the great work.

Regards

Francois

That one is still planned. I’m (still) waiting for the release of Skanect 1.9, since I’ve tested with the beta of that which improves color capture. I don’t want to release a review of software not everyone has access to. Hoping soon!

In general, I think that Skanect is great for Structure users that want more control or scan bigger things. But the bad color capture has been en dealbreaker so far. This does improve in 1.9, but my tests are from months ago. I really want to test with a recent (public release) version to do a good review.

Small sneak peak of the difference in texture quality on a small object: Normal vs. High Quality 1.

Hi Nick,

Please review the Orbbec Persee or Astra.

Regards.

I’ve contacted Orbbec to arrange this. I think the Persee is the same Sensor as the Astra Pro, but with its own computer hardware.

I just got confirmation that I’ll be receiving an Astra S to test soon. I chose the “S” version because it’s a short-range sensor which works better for the kind of 3D scanning I’m doing (objects, people). The others are long-range sensors targeted towards motion sensing at room scale.
