I have sanded an ABS print I have made and used a primer, 3 coats of paint and am I now trying to figure out which final coating I should add to give it a really nice smooth matte feel… I have seen a number of products that have this really smooth matte look and feel without looking to shiny, similar to the below image, any ideas how they get that effect?

Starting simple, wouldn’t a matte paint work if you already have it primed painted and sanded?

You can go with a matte like sealer instead of the high gloss if you have already painted it.

Hi

I didn’t think what you are after was available.

I did an internet search and found something that might be what you are after!

http://www.sherwin-automotive.com/oem-interior/products-reference/paint/soft-feel-coatings/soft-swade-g52-series/

Although it sounds pretty high tech and more than likely pretty costly, it might pay to look into this.

I hope this helps you, in some manner

Hi again

I just found this soft touch paint on internet.

http://www.rustoleum.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/RustoleumUSA/TDS/English/CBG/Wood%20Care/ROC-02_Rust-Oleum_Soft_Touch_Polyurethane_Matte_TDS.ashx

This appears to be a lower tech product that may get the result you want also.

It is Sherwin Williams Soft Touch Polyurethane #260357

The only reason I’m doing this research for you is that I also am very interested in the Soft Touch paint technology.

I’m hoping you will benefit from this research and share your result.

Probably a matte paint.

I use a matte clear coat to make a coat that u are looking for. Don’t get the gloss or semi gloss, they have a matte finish.

Most paint leaves a matte finish, you can also buy specific matte paint. I find that chalkboard paint is also very matte, and might be perfect for what you want. If you are after a finisher though, I find that most ‘matte’ varnish is actually gloss… I’ve achieved good results before by adding something to break up the smooth layer of the varnish, such as sand. This will have various mileage though depending on how fine the sand is and usually only works well for larger less detailed items. you can also sand it down again very lightly after the varnish has been applied. This really depends on the product, as some will just go cloudy when varnished and ruin any paint job you’ve got. I suggest experiment on a bit of painted card or a junk printed model first.

Just try Revell or Humbrol modelpaint
