Hi all,

Printer - QIDI Tech-1, Hatchbox ABS, bed 90, extruder 230, speed 3000mm/min, S3D.

I am getting the pictured issue at the layer start points for the first 10mm of the print.

The “red” area is the first point on the print that has this issue.

Then if you look at the “green” area, on this section the start point has moved to the back left shown by the “blue” area so you can see the location, it has the same issue. This is a total of 10mm in height and this part is “solid” with 30% infill. Above this the part is hollow with 2mm walls and prints fine.

I am using honeycomb infill. I am trying a print using rectilinear to see if it makes a difference.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

One thing to mention is that the base of this has letters recessed into it.

Watching the print process I can see that it does letter outlines and then does one inner perimeter outline (light blue one) goes back to letter outlines then does the outer perimeter (dark blue one). This is where the problem comes from, when it does the outer perimeter.

Why would it not do both perimeters at the same time?

You are using simplify3d, correct? Try printing inside out instead of outside in and go from there.

I think the issue is retraction related, if it is printing the inside letters, then traveling to the outside, and failing on the outside outline. What are your retraction settings?

Thanks Perry, I tried a print with outside-in (normal is inside-out as is the print in the pic) and the outside is ok, not great but passable, but the inside is a mess at the layer start point for the entire height of the print!

I will have to check but I think my retraction was 1.2mm and 1200mm/min maybe one at 1800. I think I adjusted slightly on these.

Retraction should have been a QIDI ABS default for S3D or not far from it.

I think I am going to wipe out my ABS profile for this printer and go back to a S3D default and try again. Any recommendations on retraction settings for ABS? I think default is 1mm and 1200mm/min.

I ran the same print on my FlashForge Creator Pro 2016 with Micro-Swiss all metal hot ends, similar S3D settings and got a pretty good print.

I may swap ABS spools between the printers and see if that makes any difference. Ironic thing is the crappy ABS is printing good and the good Hatchbox is having an issue with this print so i am not convinced the filament is the issue.

Can you post or send me the file you are trying to print? I want to look at it myself. You have been struggling with this for too long!

I want to help.

Also, is the ABS good quality?

I’d be happy to send it when I get home later.

I am using a new roll of Hatchbox ABS. Some other models printed came out nice although I felt looked a bit over extruded on the top surface.

I have more unopened rolls of ABS I can use also.
