Quote calculation hollow objects

As a test I just did a quotation for a hollow vase and was surprised at the total amount.

This is since the quote only takes the volume into consideration. Is it possible to have a check-box for hollow models (vases) so a quote calculated more correctly?

Is it possible for me as a Hub to override the charged amount?

Hi @bendalf, I’m sure we can clarify this for you. If the printer you selected was an FDM printer we automatically calculate the model with only 20% infill. For other models however, the full volume is calculated.

But if your model is indeed a vase (not closed off at the top) the model would be hollow either way. Please send the model you were measuring to robin@3dhubs.com and I’ll have a look at it for you to see what is going on

Once we’ve figured out what the issue is here I’ll reply to this thread.

I printed it myself first and a collegue wanted one also, hence the quotation and scare

From a stand-point of normal consumers I cannot expect them to edit a model so a “vase-checkbox” would come in handy.

I checked out the link and on the pictures it looks like it’s a Vase model that is completely hollow but when I load the downloaded model it into Cura or Netfabb the model is closed off. This is probably why you received a quotation for a completely filled model that would use tons of material.

Included with this post is the same Vase model as it was designed by “MaakMijnIdee” on Thingiverse that I modified slightly so now it has clear walls and an open top that will calculate correctly.

But I expect that “normal” people won’t be able to edit prints to get a correct calculation. So I still think that a checkbox to mark a model as hollow would be a nice feature

BTW: can I as a Hub operator override those quotes?

Having the ability to state the amount of infill (in your case 0%) that you would like your model to have is definitely a good feature to have, I’ll forward you suggestion to our development time

At the moment you can’t override the quotes just yet but this is a feature that is high on our priority list and you can expect it to be added soon.
