I am about to purchase a Cubify sense 3D scanner for the sole reason of 3D scanning an entire human.
My question is if it it possible and if so, what are the results with the mesh and texture of the scanned person?

Thanks,
Daniel.

Hi Daniel.

I tried that by myself but did not come up with a reasonable result. The Resolution is too low and Details get lost in the mesh. You have to scan very slowly which is not so easy on a human body (movements) otherwise the scanner will loose tracking and that is very annoying.

Hi Daniel!
The definition of the mesh depends on many factors, exposure, light, contrast etc.
I do not know well your scanner, but usually requires a post processing to fix various bugs mesh created by the scanner. In general, the scan is not an easy and requires a lot of experience and testing process.

check this site: 3D Scan Expert there are a lot of reviews about 3d scanners.

depend by what You are going to do with that mesh

a structured light scanner like einscan, scan in a box or david can give e really detailed mesh good for mechanical use, the other scanners are not able to catch all details, but maybe you need olnly a not detailed mesh with a related texture.

Hi Daniel,

I’ve the Structure Sensor and I use it to scan people in 3d, it’s not perfect but it give a good result.

You can find Nick’s review here : Structure Sensor 3D Scanner Review & Tutorial - 3D Scan Expert (he’s the person you want to ask for everything related to 3d scanning).

I advise you to check the itseez3d app too, used with the Structure Sensor it’s really easy to scan people.

To have the best results, it helps to have some good lighting too.

Cheers

Better to buy Skanect software and Xbox 360 Kinect. Better software better results. You can use ISence with Skanect too. That is what I use.

Don’t buy it. Doesn’t work as advertised. Can’t get ours to connect. Customer support is never there. Go with something else.

I use the Xbox 360 Kinect with Skanect software and it does pretty good scanning. If you have a iPad I would go for the scructure sensor in the link Get Skanect | Skanect 3D Scanning Software By Occipital

i don’t have one but I am planning to get one soon. For the same money you can get something that is portable and does not require you to go around with your laptop. Kinect is the cheapest option.

You can obtain good results, but the mesh definition will be much lower than smaller object like a head.

If you need only mesh and no texture I would buy an older version of the scanner.

The last version gives you a really define texture but it requires more time and better PC to run without loosing tracking.

You will always have some holes to fix in the model.

Stereophotogrammetry (with software like Photoscan) would be a better choice, but you need a more expensive setting.

This is an example of what you can do with the older version of the Sense scanner.

Hi Daniel,

i have the isense 3D scanner and can get okay results with just a scan of a human head. I havent had good results scanning an entire body, however there are a few tricks…

scan first the back of the body capturing the head and feet, then move in and rotate to just capture the head of the person you are scanning, you can then move out and capture the rest of the body - thats how i get my best results, although still not great.

good for a hobby but not good for professional use.

thanks.

I does the job, but it has a medium quality. See this comparation: 3D Scan Expert on Instagram: "What's the difference between a $499 and a $3999 3D Scanner? This! Structure Sensor (26K polygons) vs. Einscan-Pro (304K polygons). Both impressive in their own price range.
