My friend is having continued issues with his MP Mini Select V2. He gets a few decent quality prints (maybe 3 or 4) in a row, but at some point it appears the Y-Axis begins slipping from a few mm, up to a few cm and he gets a strange stair stepping effect that ultimately turns into a big mess. (See pictures, hard to describe).

Any ideas what I’m dealing with here? This happens despite the size / shape of the model I’m trying to print. Additionally, the print is FIRMLY stuck to the build plate, so the model itself is not moving.

Hi,

If the printer starts doing this after a few hours printing, then your Y axis stepper motor could be overheating

Check the stepper driver voltage

It happens at random times, but often fairly quickly (within the first hour of printing). I’ll check the stepper motors, regardless - thank you for the suggestion.

I’ve had my v2 for a couple days now and I’m having the exact same problem. On small/quick prints, no issues…on longer prints I get multiple shifts throughout the print. Very frustrating! Hopeful we’re able to figure something out.

Here are some better pictures, showing the full print failure.

Yes, I’m able to print small / quick prints as well - this only happens on bigger / longer prints.

I’ve been scouring the web for an answer and haven’t found anything yet. Help us, community!

This could have all kinds of reasons:

Your y axis gear wheel could be slipping on the axis of y motor, make sure it’s tight.

You could be printing too fast. Check your XY accelaration and other print speed settings.

Check your belt tension

Your print might be warping upwards and the nozzle could get stuck behind certain parts. (unlikely)

Hope this helps.

The problem has been solved (at least in this case) by switching from Cura to Simplify3D. My friend has had been able to successfully print every object that failed previously (sliced by Cura) using Simplify.

While this might not be a good solution for someone who can’t afford the $150 for Simplify, it leads me to believe that this was / is a software issue, so if you’re having this problem, consider further software tweaks (or buy Simplify)

Thanks for everyone’s help.

Since your post, has this proven to remove the problem completely? I use a different version of Cura on my other printer, but I’m having the same problem with Cura 2.5.0 and the Monoprice Mini V2, even on small prints.

He’s using Simplify3D now and has not had any issues. It seems, at least in this case, that it was a software issue. (I’m not a salesman for Simplify & I know it’s tough to spend $150 on software, but it solved a lot of my problems too).

3DCrafters, I have a V1 Select mini and when I try the “MOVE” “Y Axis” it tries to move but it does not go anywhere. Funny thing is that when I select “Home Axis” it goes to home position, front left corner (if you are facing screen).

Could you please give me a bit more detail on how the gear wheel is attached to the axis of the y motor? Is there an allen bolt on it? I could not see one looking at the motor from the right side?!

I checked belt tension, sort of… I removed the tension spring and it was way too loose. Put the tension spring back. Seems a bit tight, if I tilt the printer towards me the printing platform does not slide by itself… I want to check to make sure gear wheel is not slipping and if not I might play around with belt tension some more. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
