hi,
I got a plan to rehouse my film camera and I wanted to print out something that can be painted or have the original color of plastic/metal I want.
My main concern - I want the sides of the model have nice smooth surface and I was wondering if it possible.
Thanks!

If normal FDM printing is too rough for you, you can smooth the surface. ABS smooths with acetone.
You can also use a filler. I use XTC3D, which is a self leveling epoxy, and leaves a very smooth surface.
You can also go for a different printing method which prints smoother, such as SLA type printing, although it is a little more expensive.
Standard FDM printers printing at .1mm layer height are very smooth.

No, due to the nature of FDM. I can print on 100 micron layer height at excellent repeatability but there will always be slight unevenness and striation.
The best thing to do is acetone-mist it, sand it or even use a spray paint primer that will help fill in the tiny gaps.

Polyjet technology gives a very smooth finish on top oriented print surfaces where there’s no need for support and a slightly grainy or striated finish on bottom oriented surfaces that is easy to sand smooth. A spray paint will even everything out after with the color of your choice. Check out my hub for photos and don’t hesitate to send me an enquiry for more relevant examples if you’re interested. Good luck!
