Hi Guys,

a short Question.

Is it illegal to print Things that are licenced on Thingiverse but the Customer don’t say me that?

(From the perspective of a Hub Owner)

No.

My take on this (I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, etc. etc.).

A customer ordering a print is not a violation of the model license.

A hub filling a customer’s order is not a violation of the model license.

A customer downloading a model for personal use and paying a hub for time & materials to print that model does not constitute a commercial use of the model

-----

Violation is by the hub.:

A hub printing models and selling them (ebay/etsy/amazon/etc) does violate a non-commercial license and unless the author is credited properly violates the license.

Violation by the customer:

A Customer ordering printed models from a hub and using those models to sell online or use in a product violates a non-commercial license and unless the author is credited properly violates the license. The hub is not in violation of the license unless the hub has knowledge that the item is licensed and being used against the license terms. Feigning ignorance is not an excuse here we cancel volume orders if a customer is trying to sell non-commercial licensed objects.

Violation by thingiverse/makerbot/stratasys:

MakerBot, the makers of thingiverse taking designs off the website and filing patent applications for those things does violate the license. This Violation was by Makerbot when it happened.
