I am new to 3d print so excuse me if this question sounds stupid, here goes. If i have a picture of something say for instance a dog, can it be made into a model of the said dog?

Hey Sharon_Magee,

Its possible to create a model as long as you have images. Ideally a designer will need at least 3-4 images to create a model. First they will build up the front, then the sides, and finalise with the top and back. The more images at different angles or perspectives that you provide the designer with, the more detailed the model will be.

If it’s something complex to design and you have a physical object of it then you could find someone who offers 3D scanning services. This means they’ll scan it and the scanner will put together a model for you.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to ask.

The thing is my dog is very old and my husband is 50 in a few weeks i was hoping to get him a model of our dog as an unusual gift, so if i took photos of his front, sides and back it could be possible to do it? Do you know anyone in the wigan area who could do this please?

Ive tried to email you but my computer won’t let me for some reason, it keeps sending the email back to me!

That sounds like a great gift idea. I myself live in the Wigan area, but my knowledge of sculpting models is very basic. I also don’t know of anyone who could help you out.

If you use this site, use the filters to select 3D modelling services and find a hub in your area. They’ll be able to design your gift and print it off for you.

Good luck with your gift. Hope it all works out.

Hi @Sharon_Magee, if you go to our Start a 3D Print page, you can enter your location and then click on the ‘More Filters’ tab to drop down a menu of services that hubs may offer. Select ‘Can help with 3D modeling’ and that will show you hubs in your area that can help you with translating your designs to 3D. Choose a hub that looks good to you and you can begin discussing your project with them.

Good luck

Thank you!

You might want to try something like Sculpteo/Smoothie-3D. Amazing video of turning a squirrel picture into a 3D model.

I haven’t tried it myself, but it looks capable.
