Hello all! So, I am wondering about painting 3D printed models. I have found many articles online for normal paint, but I am wondering more about spray paint. I assume that primer must still be applied, but does anyone have any beginner tips for spray painting 3D models?

I have two quick tips. If you are painting ABS parts use a spray paint with acetone in it. Like painters touch 2x. If you are painting PLA or other materials use a separate primer.

I came across XTC 3D at Rapid 2016 event. It is a coating for 3D printed parts which can be used for smoothing and it can be painted over if needed after some sanding. More info here - XTC-3D™, High Performance 3D Print Coating | Smooth-On, Inc.
I tried it myself but I have mixed feelings about it. It did decent job for smoothing but the coated 3D prints smells like chemicals and handling/disposing the resin can be somewhat messy. However, it can be good solution for display 3d printed items as exhibits at events.

You can also alumilite clear cast, it has a bit different cure profile. The benefits over xts-3d include: it’s a slower reaction so the risk of fire and melting is lowered, it is FDA approved for food contact, it dries without a chemical smell. Both materials have their uses and both manufacturers have tech support that will try to answer your questions. As a benefit over spray paint if you use resin you can add colored powders and metallic powders and/or dyes.

I’ve used just normal spray paint in the past, as well as paint that was specially designed for both metal and PVC contact, it worked great and was very resilient to wear and tear.

Wow, thanks for all the help guys! This is what I am printing, and what I plan to paint if all prints well:https://www.youmagine.com/designs/star-wars-lightsaber-complex-version
After a bit of sanding I’ll spray it with the paint, and then a clear coat of auto enamel. I’ve found it’s the best stuff to make the lines invisible and the entire print smooth. Even if I don’t paint the model, I’ll still use the clear enamel. Great stuff!
