No Z offset, print head rises way too high!

The bed is leveled, but once a print has started the printer head rises maybe 0.5 to 1 CM over the bed. This would be easy to solve (I think) if there was a Z axis offset on the ender 3 but there isn’t. (From what I can tell)

(I’ve searched everywhere for a sollotion but it seams like I’m the only one that is having this issue.)

I am both frustrated and slightly sad because of this and I would really be appreciative of some help.

What slicer are you using? I suspect you must have some start gcode somewhere that tells the printer to raise the z axis when it starts.

I am using ultimaker cura 3.2.1. I’ll try the original version of cura that came with the sd card… I guess then I’ll know if it’s the slicer or not since the OG should defenitely work?

Another thing I tried was cutting of the tab that keeps the Z axis switch in place, after that I lowered the switch and releveled the bed.

(The bed had to be at almost max height before to be level)

Didn’t help.

I really don’t know what to do, I waited the entire summer for this and soon it will be back to school again, which means no more time to do those things I so wanted with this machine… It feels like you’ve been kicked in the stomach.

I’ll still keep on trying at least!

I uninstalled cura and reinstalled the original version, no difference. I tried lowering the print speed which actually helped the print stick although there are still problems… A filament guide arm I tried to print looked kinda like this |||||>7#>>||||||>o

Interestingly enough the first three prints I did worked perfectly, a 90 degree fan adapter for the PSU and two clips. After that everything just got f*cked.

No I didn’t drop the machine or anything like that, it just stopped working properly. Maybe the machine got self aware and depressed and therefore started drinking behind my back?..

Sidenote: When I say properly I mean the prints, there’s nothing obviously wrong physically with the machine

Hey, I got the same problem, not 1 cm but a fair bit so the filament won’t stick to the bed.

do u have any solutions? since the post is a bit older.

I don’t know if this is a z offset issue or not, I have an Ender 3 and I haven’t see this issue. However, you might want to replace your firmware, TH3D has a pretty good copy of of Marlin firmware that works well with the Ender 3 and you can see a video how it’s done here Ender 3: How to install a bootloader and update firmware - YouTube

With the upgrade you will get z offset plus thermal protection which you may not have now.

Hi there! So I had this problem too just today, and I believe it is because I had pushed the button “Set home offsets” and then manually moved my hex nut based home buttons (Generally the factory diy kit has the Y axis home too far out so the extruder will overhang the bed which is frustrating.) . Once you find out how to level your bed under auto home, if you do not repress that offset button, the printer will think that in order to print on the bed it must start at those offsets you set as you tried figuring out how to home it, making it start at home, but initializing the print at that .5 to 1 cm high at what it thinks is the center of the bed. It’s an easy fix. I’m sure there could be other factors too, this is just what worked for me!
