Just picked up a monoprice mini delta, and the test file included on the SD ran great.

So I loaded up the included version of Cura, installed the included cura ini file, and downloaded a few simple items from thingverse. They appear to fit within the displayed print volume, and indicate a reasonable number of layers, length of filament, and weight. So I save the gcode to the micro SD, put it back in the delta, and select print.

No matter what the object, I get the same reaction — the platform and extruder warm up to target temps, the delta goes through the auto leveling routine, and then … the extruder swings wildly to the side and begins bouncing up and down like a trip hammer, banging its head on the floor. I’ve already managed to gouge the platform before I could cancel an attempt. And yet, I can print the sample file again and … all is well.

it seems like I’m missing something extremely basic, but when I look at the settings on Cura, there’s nothing obviously wrong.

ideas? Thanks.

Hi,

Check the ‘origin’ setting in Cura, it may be set wrong. The Mini needs it set to an x and y of zero.

An easy way to fix it… edit the cat gcode file and grab the first twenty or so lines of text. Those set things up. You can stick them into Cura to insert into the file as you slice it.

Also, check out the Facebook group for Monoprice Mini printers. There are several, join the one with 8k+ users. You’ll find lots of tips.

One other tip… power cycle the Mini after canceling a print.

Thanks, together those tips got me going.

The included .ini appears to be for a standard mini, not a mini delta, so it doesn’t set the center to 0,0. That, plus a few minor changes, got me through a half-dozen prints that all turned out nicely.

However, then the delta stopped about halfway through a print. I assumed it was jammed, so I carefully removed the fan, took off the little … nozzle? at the top (I’m sure that’s not the right term) pre-heated it up to 210 and ran a wire through the extruder until everything seemed cleaned out. Then I let it cool, reassembled everything, advanced the filament and … nothing.

Prints start off looking like they’re going to be okay, but after the first layer or two, it just seems to stop extruding.

The Cura 15.04 on the SD seems to not accept the “0,0 is bed center” checkbox. I had much better luck with Cura 2.7. You can even import the old ini file.

Try printing from the SD card. USB seems to crash, as does Wifi I am told.
