HI

Does anyonw know how much electricity a makerbot rep 2 consumes on an hourly basis?

While actively printing with one nozzle my replicator 2X consumes 165W (with a heated build plate) and during the preheat of the build plate it consumes 200W. Your machine does not have the heated build plate, but if you want to make a conservative estimate assume 165W. You won’t be very far off $ wise. I’ll assume your electricity costs $0.20/KWh. (0.165KW * $0.20/KWh) = $0.03 / hr to run your machine. From a cost basis its effectively free. If you’re trying to determine how much printing is costing you, your labor to setup, run, and clean up after a build is a much larger component. The second largest component is the “machine rate” which is likely on the order of 2 or 3 dollars per hour. Machine rate factors in purchase price, required maintenance cost, machine scrap value after time you plan on owning it, and the number of hours you plan on owning it. Look in an industrial engineering resource to learn more about this. To estimate hours I will own mine, I looked at hours I print per month x 12 months x 5 years. I’m assuming in 5 years my technology will be out of date and I will be interested in upgrading. I hope this helps.

Ha no. Just an engineer with a lot of manufacturing background here to help.

I know that my ultimaker 2 consumes around 100 watts when printing. I’d assume it would be about the same.
