Lock Nester Certification - Best Practices

Hi, when I use the settings in the manual I get a lot of support material (print time 4,5 - 5 hours) for each file. In your manual I see examples of almost no support material, in the manual there is also stated that each lock-nester model comes with custom designed supports.

Do you have tips/ tricks for better support stucture settings.

I had an issue with Cura too. If you set the minimum support angle too high you will get lots of support material as you’ve described. If you set it lower I found that some required supports dissapeared altogether. There are a few settings you can play around with (x,y and Z clearances for support), but I came to the conclusion that Cura has bugs with creating supports (and this was backed up on some of the forums I searched) I ended up creating support manually in meshmixer and then exporting and generating the gcode in Cura.

Sorry, to clarify the setting is in Expert settings and its called “Overhang Angle for support”, the default is 60.

I stated it the wrong way round in my original post. Making this angle LOWER ADDS support of course, and HIGHERr REDUCES support.

Hi @fleethower,

I was asked by Luuk to get in touch regarding a problem I’m facing with the certification print of Monica. The printing seemed to work fine with good quality, but when completed and after minimal processing and removal of the flashing and support it seems the model does not stay together. I’ve been very carefull not to remove to much material, but still Monica falls appart. Do you have any tips/sugestions to overcome this issue…

Hi Marinv77, the print quality looks good. That piece can be a bit loose, but they should hold together. I’m wondering if you haven’t smoothed the connections enough where the supports were. I’ve run into problems when not sanding enough, but have never run into any problems by sanding too much, try smoothing those areas a bit more. Let me know if that helps, this looks like an ultimaker, correct?

Hi Greg and Maikel, you should have recently received a file with the supports already included, so that you won’t have to generate any in cura. This should make the printing go more smoothly, please let me know if you haven’t received that file.

I had this problem as well, although it was not due to sanding. My problem is that the head piece was much too loose, causing it to fall off unless the whole piece or orientated upwards.

There is one more trick you could use, but be carefull as it can potentialy ruin your print.

Try holding the lips of the head piece under hot watter and gently squezze them together so the get a fraction of a milimeter tighter. This gave the final result for me.

btw: After earning the badge, how do we get the other Lock Nester Models for test prints?

The certification model is just Monica, she is the toughest print to make. Once certified you will receive the final models around October 20 or 21, but test prints for those models should not be necessary unless you would like to conduct them on your own.

thanks for your reply. Sure test prints may not be necessary, but I like it to practice (print and post processing) to be prepared when an official order is placed.

Besides that, collecting all and take a photo of the entire “family” would be fun too

Hello everyone, @fleethower,

I have printed six Monicas and gave them to my kids to play with for “market research” (ages 9 and 11). The tail keeps breaking off so I would like to propose making the tail removable. It could also have a long and wide base inserted in a hole. Also, the coli should be thicker diameter. So, is it possible to get the CAD file to make the modifcation? In addition, maybe the tail could be customized to different shapes or be the kids name in script font.
