Occasionally I have this issue when printing. Any idea what the cause could be?

Hi Nicholas, the issue that you can see on your prints is called “shifting layers” this is either due to an error in the gcode (did it happen with multiple prints?) Or it could be caused by the stepper motors. If the steppers are told to accelerate and decelerate very fast and if you are using a high maximum speed, then it can happen, that the stepper motors skip steps. A stepper works by moving the inner rod via magnets and a controllable magnetic field. If the printhead is too heavy and/or there’s too much resistance for moving (unlubricated rods) then the stepper is too weak to move the load, instead it skips that step, wich results in a shifting layer. Try to print slower and if possible lower the acceleration values in the Marlin software. Guides on that are available on YouTube. If this error occurs with speeds, but only on this gcode you should check the slicer profilE, maybe the G-code generator left out one command and that caused the misalignment. Good luck, Marius

It has happened across multiple prints. My print head squeaks a bit when it’s printing. What could I use to lube my rails? I will also try slowing down the print. I am using Simplify 3D as my slicer.

Normal machine grease should do the job, you get it in your local hardware store. Some other people use other lubricants based on silicone or other stuff, you shouldn’t use oil, it will drip from the rods, grease will stick on them. I’ve used normal grease so far and had good results.

I have seen recommendations to use “Machine Oil”, and I found this Singer Brand All Purpose Machine Oil in the sewing department at the store for about $3. It seems to work for me.
