I just put together an Anet A8 kit. I fired it up, got the bed level and was pumped up to see all the motors working correctly. I started the preheat and almost instantly smoke came around the extruder nozzle. I looked to see and it was coming out of the heating element. I turned everything off and removed the heating element, it looks all burned up. I did try firing it up again but it no longer heats (the bed heats fine).

Is it safe to say this heating element was a dud and I need to get a replacement?
Yes, it’s looks like it’s faulty.
I’d just buy a new one since they are only a couple of pounds.

make sure the thermistor is inserted into the heating block or you will have a runaway heating effect that will make your hot end much hotter than it can stand.
the thermistor could also be bad so make sure you replace that too.
next time you fire it up, keep an eye on the extruder temp and make sure the thermistor is reading the rise in temprature.
you should take apart your heating block and make sure the ptfe tube in the heat throat has not melted. otherwise, if its melted, you will be dealing with clogs and jams.
here is an amazon link to what you will need http://a.co/i7kP7WB
but if your ptfe tube is melted, get this one Amazon.com
