The Autodesk Ember Explorer Program is still accepting applications! The Ember is Autodesk’s first foray into 3D printing hardware and it’s its shaping up to be very interesting. Why you ask? In a nutshell, the Ember is an advanced desktop resin based SLA printer. The technical specifications are available here.

The materials, hardware, and software are all open. This is a stress test for the Spark 3D printing platform, so tinkering is heavily encouraged. While the price is on the high side, Many of the 3D Hubs - yes that’s you! - would easily meet the application qualifications and put the Ember to work.

The Explorer Edition Ember ships early 2015 and applications are still open. What would be the first hack you make to an SLA printer?

Hmm, no, Ember has 1/2 build volume and 2x the price of Form 1+.

Have I missed some great feature that makes it much better than Form 1+ ?

For me, its still a wait and see when it comes closer to market. The open source nature of the Ember is a big selling point for myself. But the pricetag is a bit high. Hopefully I’ll be able to make one once more of their schematics come online.

Which 3D printer do you own now? Have you looked at Muve 3D? Muve is 100% open source.

The resolution and speed on the Ember is higher - down to 10microns (0.01mm) in the Z axis, and because its DLP the speed is much faster
