I’ve got a container I’d like to print and use as a mold. I could just print the object, but then once I’ve filled the container, I couldn’t get the object out.

So, I need to split the object in to 2 joinable halves.

Is there an automated way to do this? Or some certain steps I could do to pull this off?

3D object.

End goal

See the attachment for the object I’d like to split as well as an example of what the split mold would look like (found that image online).

Hey There,

As of my understanding there is no Automated tool for this. Why dont you cut the STL file in Netfebb and go back and Remodel the joints until it fits your idea? that would be my solution. Another Solution is to Print The Positive file and make a Rubber Mold From it wich you then can use multiple times… If this whole 3d Modeling of the mold doesnt fit for you. I personally would go with the rubber. Especially with your design… There should be no problem at all making a mold for this.

Hope i could help you,

best regards and happy printing.

Eddie.

Yes, there are tools that can be used for generating split lines. Solidworks has these which I’ve used in the past for projects. Here’s an example.

I couldn’t spot your attachment for some reason otherwise I’d have had a look-see at it.

Hello Shpigford,

you are are on the right track but you may have forgotten a step for the casted part to come out of your mold. In order to give you a definitive step by step I would need to see the object or final product you are looking at producing. If you would like some help, please email me at Nicholas.hall@254multimedia.com and we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Thank you,

Nick
