A Mothers’ Son Suffering from Crohn’s Disease Invents the Pill Coater and Uses 3D Printing to Build the Prototype and Raise Funding on Kickstarter.
When a mother’s eleven (11) year old son was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, he needed to take a lot of medication. It was hard to swallow, so she was looking for ways to “sweeten the pill” for him.
An Invention is Born!
It was her son’s idea to cover the medication with chocolate. After validating with the pharmacist, she covered his daily dose of medication in chocolate a day in advance, and her son swallowed it like candies!
That inspired her to invent a product that she named the “Pill Coater” to easily and safely cover the medication in chocolate at home.
3D Printing to Build the Prototype
She decided to use 3D printing to build a prototype and came to MatterThings 3D print shop to bring it to life.
Different modules of her prototype were 3D printed over many hours on a MakerBot Replicator 1 & 2 using PLA (Polylactic acid or Polylactide), a food safe bioplastic derived from renewable resources such as corn starch.
Kickstarter Campaign
She hopes to “sweeten the pill” for every child, parent and elderly person who is obliged to take medication and launched her campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for manufacturing.
