I had a print going great, but then it started grinding and shifting along the y axis wildly, even going outside the printable zone to the extremes, off the plate. Every motion is off even further than the last, and now it can’t even get through a single layer. The print I was doing this on used the extreme corners, like 0,0,0 and 0,140,0. It did great through 90% of a single print in this way but then seriously having problems. Any ideas?

First thing that comes to mind is an issue with the cables to the stepper motors. Can you get the extruder to home? I had my first cable go bad on the X axis recently and boy did the thing go crazy. Not sure if that is it but pretty easy to eliminate some of that hardware malfunction as a cause.

Thanks. I will have to give homing it a try. Since I didn’t build it, not sure how to replace the stepper motor cable, but probably worth a try.

If this printer has been used alot, and this continues to happen, then it is likely your stepper motor wires, as he said.

Just to add that they tend to break over time, as they are repetitively bent in exactly the same place as your extruder moves around, and the wires inside eventually wear apart.

One thing to remember in troubleshooting is process of repetition and elimination.

Can you repeat the problem. Can you change the problem and then repeat it. As example if the X axis cable is bad and you switch it to the Y axis motor then the issue should now be there.

Eliminate the obvious, easy things first.

This doesn’t mean it’s the cable but eliminate the things that are easy or you might say black & white.
