Hi all,
This is a simple question which is if I were to set the filament diameter to 1.73 for a 1.75 filament would this potentially cause a slight over extrusion as opposed setting it to 1.77 for a 1.75 cause a slight under extrusion assuming the filament is actually 1.75? This is just a hypothetical.

Yes. If you tell your slicer that your filament is thinner then it will extrude more, and vice versa.

Thanks, that was my assumption but wanted to make sure.
@davek is correct and in relation to your post about nozzles, measuring and inputting the proper filament diameter is a crucial part of carefree nozzle switching.

Thanks, I was making sure my assumption was correct. So basically if I set it at 1.73 and see maybe a small issue I can go with 1.74 because maybe that is the more predominant size overall. I don’t know how much difference .73 to .74 would make in a print with a .4 nozzle.
Nozzle size is irrelevant because the problem will scale to whatever nozzle size you are using. There shouldn’t really be any guessing. You take a caliper and measure the diameter in at least 3 places and input the average. If there is a variation of more than +/- .03 I would get better filament. The difference from 1.73 to 1.74 is only about .5% but the difference between 1.71 to 1.74 is almost 2%. This might seem insignificant, but trying to fit 2% more material where there is no space for it can definitely cause visible defects.
