I’ve a good idea for those fair phone cases. I’ve printed a test case in lay wood. Feels very cosy and smells like wood. I think the fair phone community will love these cases.

My problem is, the case is so soft when you print the upper cutout (see second photo) it bends and then you have problems with printing.

I only have STL files and it is a little bit complicated to change something on the design.

Solution is some kind of break out part, to stabilize the opening. Lay wood you can cut with a knife without problems.

I also tried to print up side down, but this makes the same problem.

The other thing is, you have to do some cleaning of the part, it is neary impossible to get super clean prints with lay wood.

You have to clean the print. For awesome look, you need to sandpaper all high parts, so you get slightly lighter color and it looks more 3 dimensional.

Also the material is much more expensive than PLA. So the price should be higher. I think 16€ for the printing hub is ok for this print.

Looks great, do you think people would want wooden phone cases? I myself would love one.

Hi zaxis,

a very good idea! I will go and try to print one for my iPhone  !

It is not easy to print with LayWood though! I will let you know how it went.

Kind regards, Guy Janssen

Hello Guy,

I tried a lot with lay wood. iPhone case designs are to weak for this material. The fairphone case design is perfekt for the flexible material.

Laybrick I think same problem, with the fairphone case it would work. With normal iPhone case design you break of the walls.
