Hey folks,
I’m attempting to build a mini scanning rig here in the NYC office, mostly for objects. I know there are more professional grade setups, but I’m going for a “can fit in an office” type of feel. Ideally, the dimensions are about the size of a desktop 3D Printer - about 50 L X 32 W X 38 H CM. There’s some room for flexibility though.
I’ve built a scanning booth for people before that uses kinect + skanect, and it was fairly straight forward and worked surprisingly well. Is a kinect + skanect the best DIY route for scanning objects? Is a rotating base or a dolly and circular track the best route for the setup? I’m leaning towards the dolly method for portability and breakdown potential. Maybe even a cineskates + 123D catch setup would get the job done.
I’d love to hear what sort of scanning setups people are using and hear any tips and tricks.
Cheers
Alex

Cool you’re building a micro scanning booth!
I found some cool tutorials on Instructables, like this one: http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Microwave-A-Color-3D-Scanner-for-Small-Objects/?ALLSTEPS
I can’t say if a rotating base is the best option but it seems quite easy to start with (and it"s pretty cheap too, 5-6$ on Amazon)
Keep us posted
