Are delta printers anything to be getting on about? I want to buy a new printer and have been looking at the Hatchbox Alpha because of its large print volume. Im nervous because delta printers are not that popular

I don’t have much experience with the delta style printer, but I know that they can be hard to calibrate. As you have probably already learned, they are capable of printing quite a bit faster than most Cartesian style printers. I’ve always wanted to buy or build one. I’d like to hear what other people think of the delta style too.

What are your thoughts on the Rostock Delta style? BTW, there’s someone who just posted on 3D Hubs talk that needs something 300mm tall. It should be on one of the first two pages. I thought you might want to help them out.

I have a delta, it originally was a Boots Industries V2.5 but when I finally got it after a long long wait, the build quality was not very good.

Now that I have fixed it, built it to how I want it to be, it delivers good quality prints, from small to large and does it very quickly.

It has a print volume of 300 mm diameter and 420 mm tall so it is quite a volume.

Sure, there are a few things you need to know or figure out if the printer is not perfect when delivered, but you cannot beat the volume versus cost, compared to cartesian printers.

It also depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to print a lot of flexible material, like NinjaFlex, you need to have a special extruder, as I do. (my own design, soon to be launched) If flexible printing is not a hot issue for you and if you like printing big stuff, by all means go for it.

Just had a look at the Hatchbox Alpha. It will not be able to print flexible materials unless you change the print head.

If you want more info, or discuss this further, don’t hesitate to ask, ok?

Rostock type of printers are good printers, the devil is in the details.

There are quite a lot of little things you need to get right. Example: The arms need to be exactly the same length. You need a powerful enough brain for the printer, Delta’s need more computing power. Such things can catch you out.

So while people are getting good results, you need to get all of it right. But there is more then enough support on the forums to get the knowledge and help you need.
