@Cinter came up with an idea to start a collaborative project to print a life size 3D Hubs bicycle! Who’s in? I am sure we can do it !

I think we just need to work out how we can make this an awesome experience for the hubs! Perhaps we could hope to enter it into a race, competition or something?

An idea voiced only by me: Get an iconic, authentic bike brand like Vanmoof or Brompton on-board (maybe you guys could help us with this) to create a really good co-brand story by using the power of the maker community to create a bike for a race and/or award.
We need to find a way of getting suitable credit for my fellow hubs who would take part.

Well we do have a Instructable’s contest going on which you guys could participate in! I would imagine an event where the local community gets together and makes a bicycle or something! Yeah, it all depends on the Hubs !

Cool cool, I’ve seen looks awesome :). As said just throwing it out there, I’m sure the community will have some other, more feasible suggestions.
I think a big community group build is a great idea! Even if it was just an art piece for display around different major cities. Something like the http://www.wethebuilders.com/ or the mini version my group did locally http://www.create1.biz/3djack/ which looks good with the “printpunk” patchwork look.
If there is a huge amount of interest and there are not enough parts to go around, I say break it off into regions who make their own.
Anyway this turns out… I’m in!

This is so great to see that our bicycle inspired others. The bicycle we designed in Solidworks is a 1:1 scale of a real bicycle. It is designed from the ground up but it isn’t very 3D-print friendly. For example I’ve attached the front wheel, as you can see it has a lot of details. Probably not the ideal printing object (we only designed another wheel purely for the prototype, the rest of the prototype is scaled down to 30% of the original).
We can share our Solidworks design with all the parts. Before we do that we want to apply the things we learned from printing the awesome prototype @k5o52 on the Solidworks design. And of course I would like to hear if there is need for our Solidworks design.
I will keep an eye out for this thread. It would be so cool if this really works out. Already seeing it in front of me, with our prototype for scale measurements haha. Awesome.Voorwiel_spaken.STL (6.47 MB)

I have two 30" x 30" x 45" (760 x 760 x 1150mm) Precision FDM printers. I design and manufacture them myself. A giant wheel/frame should be no problem to produce. The tire could be made of ninjaflex TPE. The frame can be printed with carbon fiber ABS for added rigidity and reduced weight. I’m digging the momentum and I would like to add that a Bike Culture & Alt Transportation themed 3DHubs Boston community meetup is being considered for this summer. Something like this would be a great display.

@AtomJaay I would be interested in discussing ideas with you on this, my colleagues and I are avid cyclists and are working on some bike related 3D printed accessories. I guess re: bike project we just need to work out who prints what now.
I guess time difference would make it hard but I would also like to do a decentralised meetup at some point where we are hanging out with another community using the power of the internet ( might be a little far fetched
Anyway if you are interested in some sort of collaboration let me know.

To make a quick and rough estimate:
- Front wheel
- Steering fork
- Steer
- 1st part of the frame (red section)
- 2nd part of the frame (bamboo section)
- Saddle
- Carrier
- Seat for the child (don’t know if this is necessary. It was part of the assignment we got from school)
Lose-less parts:
- Chain
- All the ‘parts’ to get the bicycle moving
The 2nd part of the frame and the carrier can be combined as the ‘back-frame’ of the bicycle.
I’ve contacted the Solidworks designer, Twan Smeets. I’ll ask him if it is possible for him to finish the Solidworks design this week so it can be uploaded and other people can refine / adjust and fine tune it.
Is this the information you’re expecting? Or do you need more detailed information?
