i am new to 3-d printing. I have successfully assembled my printer and it lays down the bed and the first two layers. during the third layer it starts to wander. at the same time the led read out starts showing random characters. Is this a motherboard issue? can anyone help me with this problem?

You could check the gcode file from cure or other program, or restart the printer. Sometime there are random characters in lcd display board.
