Thanks for the answer. I was a tv tech for many years and worked on smd boards a lot and have inspected every inch of the board for a dry joint with no luck.
After 2 days of trying everything to get the card to work I gave up and tried to work it through the usb using the software that came with it, but this was very archaic.
I will download pronterface and have a look at that and investigate octopi as I have a spare Pi at the moment.
I went up the shed this afternoon with the intention of putting the printer away as I was over it, but then turned it on to preheat to remove the filament and when I reset the sd 3 times it started working. low and behold it is 3 hours into a print with no problem.
