I just got a 3D printer and my first build was basically a nightmare. I put nothing underneath the build and it was just a basic box. Afterwards, I could not get it off at all. It was completely stuck and I eventually had to smash it with a mallet and completely destroy it. Is there some kind of material I should put on the bed to prevent this from happening? My 3D printer is a Flashforge Finder.
Hi there,
If I remember correctly the Flashforge machines use a Build Tak-like material for adhesion, which does tend to hold very well.
Do you happen to have a photo of the bottom layer of the print (if any survived)? It’s possible that the first layer was squished too closely to the bed, causing more adhesion that wasn’t easily released after the print was complete.
Here is a picture of the 3D print.

As MaddieG describes, it could well be that the 1st layer is squished too much - best check the distance between the nozzle & the bed (make sure both nozzle & bed are clean). Your manual should state the correct distance.
Buildtak, with the correct distance, should have a good grip on the product - but you would be able to remove the product from the surface without damaging either. Using a metal painter’s spatula might be helpful too.
Personally, I’m quite pleased with the buildtak flexplate solution - the buildtak sheet is mounted on a flexible steel plate & you can just bend that a bit: the product pops right off, no issues.
However, here’s also a temporary fix, you might find helpful - should your printer’s construction allow: apply a bit of gluestick on the Buildtak, as a go-between. Removing the print should be much easier, then. Remove the print surface from the printer to remove the object & you can just take a cloth to wash the glue off with some cold water & soap.
