I’m a costume designer for theatre. Want to print dress mannequin so I can sew costumes.
What 3D printer would be best? Do I need a separate 3D scanner?
Obviously I’m newbie
Hi @NelsonStacy I would have thought that it’d be a lot easier and probably cheaper to simply buy a dressmakers mannequin, they’re made for that purpose and are easy to get hold of. There’s a ton of listings on eBay starting at less than £10.
We looked into that but they are generic forms based on statistic models, not custom forms based on an individual body. Some of her clients have had back illnesses leaving their back badly twisted and a bit deformed. So a generic form doesn’t work well. a custom form for their body type is the best solution. 3D printing like DittoForm seems perfect but I don’t know enough about it to make an good choice. Thanks again for your reply. With more facts about the situation do you have another recommendation?
Hi @NelsonStacy if you need custom forms, then you really will need 3D scanning and a printer capable of producing the form itself (and given the typical size of a human torso, that limits the printers available to you).
Decent 3D scanning requires some very expensive kit and experience in using it. 3D printing large objects requires a printer capable of printing that size and experience in using it. To be honest, if something like DittoForm seems perfect for your requirements (and it does sound like a pretty good description of your needs) then you’re probably best off using them rather than trying to put something together yourself.
