hi all I have a wanhao i3. First i didn’t aware with the awfull behavior of the z axis motors but after i realized that my 3d printed models are shorter than model in .stl file, i have searched for the reason and i found that the z axis stepper motors have difficulties to turn while going upside. i have a video about that, i have tested motors fast z positioning. You can hear “tick” voices but motor can’t turn the rod, it is trying to turn but it cant. Jamming stepper motor z axis - YouTube i have lubricated the bearings and rods with machine oil at z axis. But problem is still there. What do i have to do?
1) Do i have to change the motors?
2)i have more powerfull nema 17 stepper motors with 4.6 volt and 1 amphere rating, Do i have to calibrate the stepper motor driver(a4988 i think)?
3)at last is there an easy way to solve this problem without doing the things above

chances are your lead screws are out of alignment, I would do this Z blueprinting - Wanhao Duplicator i3 blueprinting alignment video - YouTube
jojowasher is correct. You need to align your x rods (with the X belt off) so that the x portion raises and lowers freely on the Z then you set the x rods in place with the set screws then re-attach the x belt. If you do all this with the belt on then it just cause problems because it pulls the X ends inward and binds if the X rods are not locked in place correctly with the belt off.

With the new units the steppers could be over powered but I don’t think that would be his issue. It sounds more like an alignment or binding issue causing the z steppers to bind (the X axis ends / Z nuts bind). I would try that before opening the controller box and messing with the stepper current / VRef settings.
