I am a computer science student coming towards the end of my dissertation. My ambitious project was a data physicalisation toolkit built on top of the CSG modelling package BRL-CAD. Unfortunately, I have not been able to implement nearly as much as I’d planned in the short timeframe given. My software’s name is ADaPT (Adaptable Data Physicalisation Toolkit). So far I have achieved the automated generation of 3d printable bar-chart models from data in csv files. I am desperate for testers and will offer a £5/~$6.38 (paid via paypal) bounty to the first 10 people willing to fill in a brief and honest evaluation form of my software. The only requirement is you will need a 64 bit Linux environment for testing. I hope to open source my software with permission from my university after completion. Thanks, it’s great to hear people think it has use as so far I’ve been working in a dark room lit by my monitor for most of the last couple of months trying to get it to match my vision haha. My first major milestone would be achieving OpenSCAD’s features for CSG, then I can really start to make it distinct from other CAD projects. I’m picturing a repository for it’s modules written by more advanced users and the basic operation being easy as pie for everyone else. Currently most of the work is going into the scene graph building for the lua modules and the translation into BRL-CAD mged commands. All sorts of nasty quirks I’ve run into along the way. Bar charts are only the beginning, I’m looking into all sorts of niche physicalisation types.
