Rusted Marvin

We haven’t seen too many of these around so figured we would post up our first attempt at some rusted finishes.

Printed with the Proto-pasta Magnetic Iron, a little salt bath and some sun and we have a classic antique marving on our hands. Really liking this filament and wait till you see how it looks in our steampunk masterpiece!

That looks great! I’m curious, how models would look like as a rusted 3d print, when the real-life part is usually made out of metal, too. I’m thinking about a rusty anvil or a charcoal-powered train (probably not the right term) being 3d printed out of the magnetic iron filament. I’ve once printed a small lion bust out of a copper composite filament, that, or any other animal bust would look amazing with this material too, I guess. What was your general experience with printing magnetic iron Filament? Cheers, Marius Breuer

Steampunk Marvin is pretty damn cool! Would you mind sharing the printing settings and processing details you used to achieve such an amazing print? Many of us would like to try this now

You can usually get great results with standard PLA settings!

Check this one out I wrapped him with a peroxide, vinegar, salt soaked towel and put him in a plastic bag in the sun. The rusting is almost immediate but I left this over the weekend. More steps on our @proto_pasta Instagram page

Wear with the iron is not too bad. It’s only 40 wt% and the iron actually helps the plastic flow more easily.

You can try a 125g loose coils without worries or pick up a wear resistant nozzle from Proto-pasta.com if it makes you feel more comfortable trying this out! A little risk for a lot of fun!!!

Thanks for the feedback! Yeha as mentioned it prints great - I actually run the same settings for it as I do with the Colorfabb which is pretty much the recommended settings and it prints awesome. I actually quite like it when it fresh as it looks more metallic than the other metal fills. Cheers!

Haha - we’ll have to customize him and add some gears next time. Gears for ears would be dope.

About 2hr to print (he’s 2x size) and rust only took a day - salt bath for half - in the sun for half. But he’s getting more sun as we speak and I cleaned up some of the salt crystals so he’s gonna be looking extra grimey.

We also tried out the @protopasta iron filament trick. The different functions each of these filaments can produce is absolutely amazing!
