Lots of modelforums are discussing how 3D printing can enrich the demand of state of the art modelling having a perfect fit in the model scenery. The answer is on demand printing of those building, starting with the Netherlands!

What isn’t nicer for model enthusiast or historical associations then having an old railwaystation/building from your city on a modeltrack or just to look at? It just brings up memories from the past!

In order to give all the possibility to own such a building, i am redesigning old drafts in Sketchfab to make the model print ready on demand through 3DHubs.

Project Dutch State Railway Station 3Th class

photo Zaandijk 1900 ( thanks to stationsweb)

Basis is one of the famous Dutch Railwaystation designed by van Brederode which where built from 1862 till 1868 in different cities such as Koog Zaandijk ,Wormerveer,Krommenie-Assendelft,Assen, Heereveen, Hoogezand Sappemeer, nieuwe Schans, Hoogeveen ( see stationsweb }

Redesign

It took approx. 80 hours to draw the old floorplan into a drawing and then to reassemble that drawing into printable parts.

Building and fitting
For the building to be printable on my Leapfrog Dual Creatr i tested the parts with Simplify3D software on quality. The whole design was mostly reduced to horizontal pieces of 20/20 cm

these are quite large printvolumes the Leapfrog can print.

Material use

The filament used was PLA white, grey, brown and silver. Setting for prints differ because of the building sizes and required details. That means layer height between 0,1 and 0,2 mm . total runtime for the print is 55 hours and filament use is approx. 820 cm3. Infill was made concentric or rectilinear at different infill percentages. All part can and are airbrushed or painted if necessary and glued together ( glue or a gluepistol) This is just what you can expect from a modelkit, only now with unique features.

The Result

and here it is dimensions L79cm/b20cm/h20cm

Sweet project! thx for sharing

Some of the early images are broken btw, which I recon to be a shame

Super cool project! Were there any difficulties in getting the details of the trains printed?

Yip there where some challences in:

1.Result/detail versus printtime

To get settings right for instance on the bricks. The Leapfrog Creatr can print quit good detail but it is the factor printtime which has to be reduced or else i wold be to expensive to reproduce. So I tried different layer heigths, to get the the acceptable result against the lowest amount of time.

2.Fitting of the parts.

Fitting doors and windows in the structure asked for a little reduction of size to perfectly fit. Now you just have to give a little pressure and they will hold/click even without glue, this took me a while.

3. Colouring the model.

I thought of customized filament , but stil you can not get the best end result as with painting or airbrushing the model, so i skipped this and reduce it to three colours brown, white and grey/silver.

That’s great work @Johnsaen! Doesn’t seem too much of a cost for what you get. I wish you the very best of luck in your enterprise.

Cheers!

thanks Andy

Here comes the power of 3D versus mass manufacturing.

Customizing is the strength to give the customer value for money!

It now up to the crowd to find 3Dhubs for nice products
