Hello, I am a beginner and was very positive about the I3 till today. Have it for one week and made 9 successfull prints.
However, after a mistake (printing without any support) and putting out the energy switch during a print the Z axis is out of control.
I tried to startup again from the beginning but even with the buildingplate completely down de extruder does touch the building plate.
How can i reset the home position of the extruder to a higher level (further away from the building plate)?
Help!
Heinrich
Hi Heinrich,
My recommendation :
- Start up the printer
- by using quick settings disable the steppers
- now lift the 2 - axis by turning on the couplers of the Z-axis. Do this till about 10 Cm
- now make sure the Z-has is horizontal. You can measure each Z- ax with a ruler.
- go to home all in quick settings
- diable the steppers
- level the buildplate again
- go to home all again
Best Regards,
Dirk
At the back of the Wanhao i3, you will notice the Z end stop switch. It’s a tiny spring lever with a small switch on it. Wanhao has already pre drilled 2 sets of holes. Use the smallest Allen key that came with your I3 to remove the end switch carefully. The spring lever can jump out at times if you accidentally touch it. ao be extra careful. If your hotend is too close to the bed at maximum spring compressed level, try moving the z end stop switch to the top 2 holes. This should give you enough allowance to adjust the springs and make the bed just nice to touch the bottom of the nozzle.
Once tou you have done that, search Thingiverse for Wanhao i3 Z end stops. There are quiet a few plug and play adapters that can be mounted to the frame which makes adjusting the z height easy.
If if this solves your issue, give a thumbs up.
Sounds like maybe your Z endstop switch is not hitting the motor, mine did this once in a while. What was happening with mine is the metal part of the switch was off center, so the motor came down and didn’t hit it reliably. What I did was to print this:
this moved the switch out and gives it something solid to hit.
Thanks,
Donovan

The end stop. Raise it by unscrewing and carefully moving it up to the present drilled holes if you have the V2.
Thanks Dirk, it worked and it is printing again!
