Hi there,
As cinema is one of my other passions, I wanted to share about this great exhibit, The Motion Factory, which shows how animated movies are made. No surprise if I post it here, 3D printing is often used: to make decors but also characters with different expressions, among others.
I’m sure that movie production is going to be revolutionnized by 3D printing, as it reduces costs and thus offers way much more liberty to create/try/improve. Also, printing any accessory in green makes the post-production way much more flexible, as those items are ‘removable’.
Maybe @Chiel and @EMageIn3D could share their experience about this

Hi,
As a former 3D artist in the belgian animation sector I have encountered projects using this method.
3D printing has great potential in the stop motion films and is saving huge amounts of time at the production pipeline by being able to print every face, expression or pose.
Also a great example is the stop motion film ‘Paranorman’ who’s creators got enthousiaste in to exploring this new world of stop motion.
I believe many will follow.
Thanks, Paranorman has just been added to the long list of movies I still have to watch

I approached a studio once about this but the reality is that it’s not cost effective and is actually SLOWER than standard methods. 3d printing does have a place in the world if stop moron and that’s for the oats that aren’t animated or less animated, but that’s not to say with advanced in the tech this won’t change!

We had this Samurai movie the other day, where they printed all the helmets through our platform. The movie isn’t out yet so we are not allowed to share unfortunately. But they looked cool and the guys said the total price was about 20% of what they are used to pay
