I am looking at potentially a Printrbot Simple Metal or even attempting to get one built although i feel that this may be too much of a challenge, thoughts?

Yes Printrbot would be the way to go in my opinion. Only one with good quality in its price class. Also has been reviewed very well by MAKE in their buyers guide
