Hi, I have a wanhao duplicator i3, currently when I print it exstrudes fine to a point and then fails to exstrude at a certain point. But if I restart the print it will estrude fine again.
Im looking into taking it to get a full service probably soon, seeing as I don’t have the time to do it myself, what could the problem be causing this? If anything i would like to fix this problem so it is useable again.
Try printing some other file and see if you have same problem.

Hi,
Is the temperature high enough, this could give problems if it doesn’t melt fast enough. the filament wheel will start to slip if there’s to much back strength.
This is also a problem that could be caused by the retraction. did you might changed it lately?
Hi,
Has this happened often? Or did it start just recently?
1. Check your filament size, and condition.
2. Check printing temperatures
3. Take a look at your printing profiles. Make sure your filament size is accurate and nozzle size is correct.
4. Does it happen to a specific roll of filament or does it happen with others. It may just be the filament is poor quality
5. Make sure that the filament is not binding on the roll when being fed.
6. Take a look at the feeding screw it could be overwhelmed with filament particles stuck to it preventing constant feeding.
7. Does the filament curl up when initially printing? If so you may have a clog.
I hope you can fix the problem. Let us know how it goes.
You may be experiencing a partial clog. I encountered the same problem myself, where the print fails after some point. Here are some fixes I used:
1. Try checking your filament for large dust particles (dust particles in your filament can cause clogs). If it has, use a filament filter like this one (Universal Filament Filter and Lubricator by CreativeTools - Thingiverse )
2. Check if you’re using the manufacturer-recommended temperature for your filament. Using lower-than-recommended temperatures can cause the filament to be more viscous and flow slower than it should be.
3. If the above fixes don’t work, your hot end tip may be contaminated with burned plastic. Try disassembling the extruder, clean the hot end tip, and (optional) replace the PTFE tubing (in my case I had to clean the hot end tip and replace the PTFE tubing since some plastic has fused with it, creating a partial clog). You can browse Wanhao’s or Maker’s Muse’s channel on how to do this
Also, try not to let your extruder sit at pre-heat temperature (e.g. 200-215 degrees) AT IDLE for too long. Doing so may cause the plastic in the PTFE tubing to expand too much and form a bulge that can clog the nozzle. I hope that helps
Hi,
A bit more information would be required to troubleshoot this.
How does the failing occur exactly? Is there a clicking sound, does the extruder just suddenly stop? Does it always stop at the same place on the print?
As per the other answers, more information is also required such as:
Material (PLA/ABS/etc)
temperature
slicing software used
etc.
Currently what happens is:
Start the print -printer gets up to temp -ABS
Starts printing
randomly stops exstruding but carrys on the print path.
Im gonna guess it’s a blockage but don’t really trust myself to clear it without damaging the nozzle.

There are a variety of videos on HOW TO fix just about all known problems with the printer
The cleaning of the clog or blockage on your extruder is a 5 minute job. Only requires removing 2 screws, and unplugging a cable connection. Just follow all the precautions.
The printer will need to be at temperature. Once you remove all the parts you will have access to the feeding screw and the feeding internal tunnel. You will use the smallest torque wrench in your set received with the printer. and push it through the top of the feeding tunnel gently (this will push the filament stuck inside the extruder housing out through the extruder. Clean out the feeding screw with dental tools if you have them if not small brush will do.
I alway finish with cleaning filament before loading the new filament. It cleans out the extruder really good.
You wont harm anything at all. Besides the majority of these videos are publish by the Wanhao group themselves.
If in doubt email their support group and ask them first if you have any concerns. They are really good with answering all your inquiries, just give them time to do so, since they are in a different time zone.
The Duplicator i3 has the problems of blockages. It is something almost everyone is experiencing at first until they get used to the tricks to take care of the isssues.
I believe I have had to clear a clog on the extruder at least 8 times. Usually happens when I go from PLA to HIPS. And the pushing of the filament and quickly extracting it to replace filament usually doesnt work, some will alway remain inside the feeding tube. Inside the feeding tube there is a section which is plastic, this part remains cooler that the extruder. It is there where the problem begins.
Good luck let us know how you are progressing
what is the temperature readout on the LCD when the blockage starts? What software are you using to slice?
