I’m having an issue with my Monoprice Maker Ultimate printer, which is a rebadged Wanhao D6. Every time I print, there seems to be a delay before the extrusion starts. If I print a part with a skirt, the first couple of inches of the skirt don’t print at all, then it starts to extrude but adheres poorly for a few mm, then it seems to hit its stride and start extruding normally. The bit that adheres poorly can be a problem since it can stick up and catch the head on subsequent passes making a mess. Has anyone dealt with this before? There doesn’t seem to be a setting in the version of Cura that came with the printer to tweak this…

It’s likely to just be where the plastic is undo-ing a retraction move from the end of the previous print, it’s why on makerbots and the like print a line at the front of the bed before anythig else. it’s to syncronise where the plastic is with where it should be. anyway, try setting your skirt to further from the object, I’m sure theres a ‘start gcode’ part you could just add in to make it recover easier. post a photo of the printer and I’ll post the part of gcode to add into your ‘start gcode’ section in cura.
I have the same issue with my Maker Select V2, but it seems to be more pronounced with certain filaments (Wood is the worst offender). It generally doesn’t cause issues, as I typically print everything with a brim so by the time it gets to be actual print, it’s “hit it’s stride”.
That said, I would like to know if there is a fix for this. On a print without a skirt / brim, this would surely be a problem.
Yes. I noticed that with ABS and the spool of PLA that came with the machine this is less of a problem, but it’s more pronounced with a different brand of PLA.
Hmmm… the “simplified version” is what cura is doing already. I’ll see what the “advanced version” does…
And as it turns out, the advanced gcode preamble did the trick. The extruder is now extruding right from the start and my initial adhesion is *much* better. Thanks!
Good to hear. I did the same thing only a couple of weeks ago!
