I might be missing print jobs because 3DHubs thinks my printer is too small.
I started with a Printrbot Simple (workable volume 90 x 90 x 90mm), then modified it many, many times and now I have a workable volume of 220 x 200 x 90mm. However, there are no options available to enter that. I do not want to 3DHubs creating a special printer just for me, because the volume will change again once I have a longer Z axis.
I think 3DHubs is making too much work for themselves. The list of possible printers is huge and growing. Please allow us owners to specify custom print volumes!
I recently made a Fallout 4 helmet for my son’s friend. My son chopped the model up in Blender and gave me the STL files to print. 120+ hours and a few spools later: Fallout 4 Helmet | Flickr
At one point I was worried about deadlines and looked to other hubs in my city. That’s when I realized my hub was potentially missing prints because it was filtering out jobs based on an assumed print volume.

I have a Simple Metal and I’m planning a build area upgrade as well, although I’ve not yet been able to put aside the money for it. I have the same concern regarding the build area settings. I contacted support a while back to find out what the process was when I did upgrade, and I was told basically that they would create a custom printer for me.
I’m with you, I don’ t think that’s a good plan for the team at 3DHubs. I understand that they’re probably trying to make sure that when someone lists a certain printer that they are advertising it with the correct specifications, but in a field where there are not only upgradeable platforms but also custom-built machines, it’s really limiting for both 3DHubs staff and members to restrict printer postings to pre-defined settings.

Are you good in tinkering and building? You can try a appoach what just popped into my head: Attach a pantograph onto the printhead support and place the head outside the machine. A pantograph is used for centuries to enlarge and copy complex shapes in to different sizes. You might try this… If you succeed, tell me about it!

Ok - I actually had a customer excessively hack up their model to “fit” my printer. All because I cannot customize the print volume I am (_currently_) capable of handling.
PLEASE LET US SPECIFY CUSTOM PRINT VOLUMES!!!
