Check of Model Dimensions

Does the cloud service that calculates cost factor in the size of a part and whether or not it will fit on a given printer? I just got an order on my Prusa i3 MK2 for a part that is 14" x 9" x 8.5". This is too big to fit on my print bed, and even too big to fit on an Ultimaker 2+ Extended that I have access to. I got all excited because it was a very high value order, but now I’m not sure if I will be able to complete the order.

It currently does not check for printer specific volumes. I had also received an order for an object that was over 30 inches long, and I have a Form2 resin printer.

That seems odd. I mean, they have the data. You’d think they would make a safe-check for that. Now I have a higher percentage of cancelled orders for something I can’t help.

I think the system assumes that you can print it at a 45 degree angle to also fit it on the bed.

You may be thinking about support generation algorithm for determining support volume for SLA prints. That description was given regarding supports, not for an actual “will it fit?” determination.

They (3DHubs) responded to my email. It was just an issue on their end.

Yes I had the same experience with an order too big for my printer and 3DHubs support told me they were looking into it, but that the software is supposed to make that check before putting the list of available hubs.

As far as I know, 3D Hubs DOES look at the size of the model and is able to see if it would fit on your printer.

That said however, sometimes the order will be processed if the model can be printed vertically, even though in most cases this is not a prefered solution. For me, printing a 14"x9"x8.5" object would not be a problem, but most printers are much smaller than that.

Am a bit surprised that 3D Hubs would let the order pass through to your Hub actually.

Hey William,
This is Nahla here from 3D hubs. I have checked the order you are talking about and I happen to have found the issue. The customer of that order has initially submitted this order with a file that fits your print bed. But then, they uploaded the new file with the dimensions that are bigger that what you offer. Thanks for pointing this out, I will pass this feedback on in order to try and avoid that problem in the future.

how would 3dhubs check my printer’s dimension if I am not able to put them somewhere in the Printer profile?

Hi,

We have the dimensions of the build volume for every printer model that’s in our system, and use those to determine if a model will fit in any given printer’s build area.
