Arthur,
dimensions?
I will visit RDM Makerspace ths week for a scan of a 150 x 150 x 300 mm appliance (tool)
they told me it was accurate for full person scaning so maybe issue with accuracy.
please contact them at www.rdmmakerspace.nl, maybe they can obtain a scanner for smaller objects
@anyone a better sugestion? this would help me too…
Thank you and good luck
Chris

I have a 3d scanner that can scan up to 0.1mm detail, located in Leiden
If it is a modern key, you are better off at a keymaker to have it copied
can you give an idea how it looks, and the size ?

Thanks for reaction guys! The problem is that it is a last car key, other 2 are lost. The spare one is made of plastic and keymaker said that he might break it during copying process. If it will happen, game is over, I can’t access my car again. So to have at least something, I want to have a digital copy of it. Please help me solve my problem. Thx

3D scanning such an object might need even lower resolution then the 0.1mm I have,
even the slightest detail lost will make the key unusable.
you probably better off making mold.

At least I can 3D print it and test it… Also will be a good reference for your scanner if its working

Hey air181,
You may get better results if you got someone to modelling it. As long as you told a modeller what size the key was, they could use a picture to copy the design. I’ve heard that some criminals are printing keys in a similar way by taking pictures of keys.
A modeller would be a better option as it is not too complex, but needs to be precise.
Hope this helps

Thanks for suggestion. I’m modeller myself by the way :). Maybe I should try to reproduce it indeed…

Yeah it’s probably the best way. If you have a software where you can set a image for the background you can then get a perfect replication. Hope all goes well.

The only problem is precise picture scaling… Basically it is “manual” work… Precision want be good. I’ll be lucky if printed key will work after such procedure.
